Rocks Cry Out

07/23/2019

One of the most notorious and outspoken atheists of the twentieth century, Anthony Flew, converted to deism for a number of scientific and philosophical reasons. One of the main points of contention he faced and could not adequately explain was the first emergence of life from nonliving matter. Even in his ardent atheist days, he maintained that there was no satisfactory naturalistic explanation for such a phenomenon.

In 1975, Gary Dahl became a millionaire by selling the perfect "pet"....a rock! This pet did not need to be fed, walked, bathed, or groomed. It did not need to be cared for, nurtured, or even acknowledged. How wonderful for the not-quite-committed caretaker! But even the youngest of minds will see the foolishness in this idea. Given an infinite amount of time, undifferentiated matter will NEVER become aware, develop a conscious, or think. It is laughable to assume otherwise, yet that is exactly what atheists want us to believe all for the sake of denying the existence of God. It seems that some people are going to great extremes to avoid divine accountability. I like what John Lennox said, "Nonsense remains nonsense, even when talked by world famous scientists." That's a good word!

Challenge: Pick up a rock and give it to someone. Ask them to watch it with care and love because it is your baby/father/cousin. Watch and listen for their reaction. Use this opportunity to talk to them about the absurd suggestion that nonlife could ever develop into a living being with conscious thought and rationality.
