Should I?

07/10/2019

There is a popular ethical phrase attributed to Immanuel Kant that states, "ought implies can." As Christian's we ought to (should) do many things, and if we know we ought to (should) do them, it means that we are capable of doing them (especially given the power of the Holy Spirit living inside of us). For example, I know I ought to (should) wash my clothes after a long sweaty day in the yard (and I can!). I know I ought to (should) be kind to other people (and I can!). If I ought to do something, I am able to do it! So why do we keep making excuses?

Christian, you know you should be striking up conversations about Jesus with everyone and because you know you ought to be doing this, you can! Bind that spirit of fear and doubt that come against you. Bind the dark forces that would have you be complacent in your life. Bind the enemy from distracting you or hindering your attempts. God has give you a spirit of love, power, and a sound mind!

However, this relationship does not go both ways! Just because we CAN do something does not mean we should! For example, I CAN spend my days binge-watching TV shows, but it doesn't mean I should. I CAN use words to verbally assault others, but it doesn't mean I should. The apostle Paul says everything is permissible but not everything is beneficial (1 Cor 10:23).

Today's challenge: ask God, "What should I be doing?" What should I do with my time?... working diligently, serving others. What should I do with my words?...be encouraging, proclaim truth. What should I do with my actions?...pray without ceasing, live joyfully.  God has given us the ability to do what He has called us to do! Let's serve Him well today.
